- addresses
- phone numbers
- passwords
- school details
- account information
- private family information
- sensitive photographs
- other people's personal information
Depending on age, you can also explain that information entered into online services may be processed or stored differently depending on the product and its settings.
Privacy is not a separate lesson from AI literacy. It is part of it.
6. Teach the difference between an AI tool and an AI relationship
This is becoming increasingly important. An AI that helps explain algebra is one thing. An AI designed to behave like a companion, confidant, romantic partner, or emotionally responsive friend is another.
Children and teenagers may not experience that distinction the way adults expect. Common Sense Media reported in 2025 that nearly three in four teens surveyed had used AI companions, with a third saying they had chosen an AI companion instead of a human for a serious conversation and a quarter reporting that they had shared personal information with one.
This deserves a direct family conversation:

7. Let them catch AI making mistakes

- Ask it for sources.
- Ask it the same question two different ways.
- Ask it something obscure.
- Compare two AI-generated answers.
Look for:

- contradictory answers
- missing context
- excessive confidence
- weak sources
- stereotypes
- oversimplification
Then talk about why the mistake matters. This builds skepticism without cynicism.
The lesson should not be: AI lies, so never trust it.
It should be: AI is a tool. Understand the tool well enough to decide when verification matters.

8. Show them that AI can be creative without being the creator of their identity

11. You do not have to understand AI better than your child
